Standby Generator Installation Cost in Illinois: A Real Line-Item Breakdown

Every generator cost page I pull up gives you the same thing: a single number or a giant range with no explanation of what's actually inside it. "$5,000 to $25,000, installed." That's not a cost estimate, that's a shrug. It tells you nothing about why your neighbor's install came in at $9,000 and yours might come in at $18,000 for what looks like the same generator sitting in the same size yard.

I'm not going to give you a number and walk away. I'm going to walk through the actual line items that make up a generator install — the ones a contractor is pricing whether he shows them to you or not — so that when you get a quote, you know what you're looking at instead of just looking at the bottom line and hoping it's fair.

Why Every Generator Cost Page You've Read Is Useless

The national cost-guide sites pull an average from thousands of installs across the country — different states, different labor markets, different code requirements, different housing stock — and hand you a range wide enough to be true and useless at the same time. Angi puts the average install near $4,520; HomeAdvisor spreads it from $5,000 to $25,000. Both are national numbers with no idea what labor, permits, or code actually look like in your township.

None of those pages know whether your gas meter is 15 feet from the generator pad or 90 feet, or whether your panel is a 100-amp service from 1975 that needs upgrading before a transfer switch can even go in. Those two things alone can move a quote by thousands of dollars — same blind spot as the sizing charts I already ripped apart in the sizing guide.

What Actually Drives the Price

A generator install isn't one line item, it's six or seven, and they don't move together.

Unit size and brand. This is the one number every cost page leads with, and it matters, but it's rarely the biggest swing factor once you're already looking at a properly sized system. A bigger kW rating costs more in raw hardware, and brand matters too — Generac, Kohler, and Cummins price differently unit for unit. As a rough equipment baseline — the unit plus its matched transfer switch, before any install labor — a 10–14kW air-cooled system for essential circuits runs about $3,200–$4,200; a standard 18–22kW whole-home system about $4,800–$6,200; a large 24–26kW system about $6,000–$7,500. An oversized unit is money spent on capacity you'll never use, which is exactly why the load calculation in the sizing guide comes before any of this.

Transfer switch type. This is a bigger cost lever than most homeowners expect, because it's really a decision between three different products, not one line item with options.

Gas line run. This is the line item that surprises people most, because it has nothing to do with the generator sitting on the pad and everything to do with the distance and obstacles between that pad and your gas meter or LP tank. A short, straight run of properly sized pipe is cheap. A long run — one that crosses under a driveway or through a finished basement, or one that requires upsizing the pipe diameter to deliver enough gas volume at distance — gets expensive fast, in materials, labor, and sometimes a second trade if boring or concrete cutting is involved. As a rough figure, gas line runs about $20–$35 a linear foot with a $400–$600 base minimum; a standard 15–25 foot run to the unit lands around $600–$1,200, and hand trenching, concrete cutting, or upsizing the gas meter can add $500–$1,200 or more on top. In Illinois this work is almost always subbed to a licensed plumber per local code, which is part of why it's a separate line and not folded into the electrician's labor. Natural gas vs. propane matters here too — an NG tap into an existing meter is a different scope than setting a new LP tank and running line from it.

Electrical work. The generator and transfer switch have to land on a panel that can actually support them. If your panel is old, undersized, full, or otherwise not in shape to accept a transfer switch and a generator breaker, that's a separate scope of electrical work before the install even starts — sometimes a full panel or service upgrade. This is exactly why a real quote starts with someone looking at your actual panel, not a phone estimate off your square footage.

Concrete pad (or composite pad). Standby units sit on a code-compliant pad, not on dirt or grass. A pre-cast composite pad set on a leveled gravel base runs about $400–$700 all in. A poured-in-place reinforced concrete slab runs $900–$1,600 and is only necessary where a specific village code in Cook, DuPage, or Lake County calls for one.

Permits and inspections. Not optional, not a place to cut a corner (see below), and genuinely variable by where you live — more on that in the Illinois section.

Labor. Everything above requires hands — electrician, and often a licensed plumber or pipefitter for the gas work, sometimes a separate concrete crew. Labor is priced by the job, not a flat hourly rate multiplied by a guess, because the scope above determines how many hours and how many trades are actually involved.

Three Ways People Actually Buy a Generator

Once you know what's driving cost, it's easier to think about this as three real tiers rather than one blurry range.

Portable Generator + Interlock Kit — about $1,500–$3,200 installed

The floor of the market for legitimate, code-compliant backup power. You're buying a portable generator, an interlock kit for your panel, an inlet box, and the electrical labor to install it correctly. All in with the generator, that's roughly $1,500–$3,200 — or $900–$1,500 for just the electrical labor and hardware if you already own the portable. The hardware itself (interlock plate, 30A or 50A power inlet box, back-fed breaker, and the wire run) is $250–$400 in parts; a licensed electrician's labor for the 1.5–3 hours it takes runs $600–$1,000; and a dual-fuel 7,500–10,000W portable generator adds $700–$1,500. The tradeoff built into any manual system: someone has to be home to start it, fuel it, and manage what's plugged in — nothing happens automatically.

Partial-Home Standby — about $7,500–$11,500 installed

A permanently installed standby unit, sized to a defined list of essential circuits rather than the whole panel, on an automatic transfer switch. Smaller unit, smaller ATS, smaller gas line requirement than a whole-home system — but real, code-compliant, hands-off backup power for the circuits that actually matter during an outage. Installed, that runs about $7,500–$11,500: a 10–14kW unit with a 100-amp, 16-circuit transfer switch is $3,200–$4,200 in equipment, electrical labor and subpanel wiring another $2,500–$3,800, and the gas hookup plus permits $1,200–$2,000.

Whole-Home Standby — about $11,000–$18,500 installed

Everything on the panel, sized to the full calculated load from the sizing guide, on a properly sized ATS. This is the top of the range for a reason — bigger unit, bigger switch, more electrical and gas scope to support it. Figure $11,000–$18,500 installed, and it can cross $20,000 when the job needs long gas or conduit trenching or a main panel upgrade to carry it. The breakdown: an 18–26kW unit with a 200-amp whole-house ATS is $5,000–$7,500 in equipment, service-entrance labor and panel integration $3,500–$6,000, and the plumbing (a larger-diameter gas line for the higher CFM demand), the pad, and suburban municipal permits another $2,000–$3,500.

Whichever tier you're looking at, the honest way to compare quotes is line item by line item — unit, switch, gas work, electrical work, pad, permits, labor — not bottom line to bottom line. Two quotes with the same total can represent very different scopes of actual work.

Illinois-Specific Cost Realities

ComEd storm-outage territory is part of the math, even though it's not a line item. A lot of the Chicagoland suburbs with the oldest tree canopy and oldest housing stock also show up repeatedly in storm-outage reporting. That doesn't change what a generator costs to install, but it's the reason the math pencils out for a lot of homeowners here in a way it might not somewhere with buried lines and newer infrastructure.

Permits are municipal, not statewide, and so are the fees. Illinois has no single statewide permitting standard for generator installs — Cook County, DuPage County, and each municipality within them set their own requirements, fees, and inspection process. Naperville, for instance, charges $85 total for a residential generator permit — a $40 permit fee plus a $45 inspection. Across the rest of Chicagoland — Cook, DuPage, Will, and Lake — residential generator permits typically run anywhere from $75 to $250 or more once municipal plan-review fees are in the mix. This is exactly the kind of detail that makes a "one flat number" cost page dishonest for an Illinois homeowner — what you pay in permit fees depends on your address, not a national average.
